Bakersfield

Timeline:  2021-Present

With support from the State of California CalVIP Grant program, CPSC is supporting the City of Bakersfield to develop, implement and evaluate a comprehensive violence reduction strategy.

Bakersfield’s GVRS strategy combines concepts from several evidence-informed strategies: the group violence reduction strategy (also known as focused deterrence), police-community trust building (through procedural justice) and community violence intervention.

This combined strategy seeks to reduce violence citywide while providing support and opportunities for community members at the highest risk of violence. Together, the city and community partners also work to strengthen police-community relations with residents and neighborhoods who are directly impacted by violence.

With CPSC’s support, Bakersfield PD is making significant organizational changes to focus more strategically on violence prevention and collaborative work with CVI organizations.  The City is also developing an Office of Violence Prevention within the City Manager’s Office and investing in community-based organizations to build their capacity for best practice intervention work.

This represents an important restructuring of the local public safety system around a partnership-based approach that seeks to reduce violence, victimization and recidivism for community members most impacted by gun violence.
